Covestro launched m6011fr and m5005fr for medical equipment enclosures

Covestro announced the launch of new durable materials for medical device enclosures and hardware. The new Makrolon® M6011 FR (a medical polycarbonate) and Makroblend® M5005 FR (a medical polycarbonate/polyester mixture) offer a differentiated combination of properties for improved chemical resistance while using the next generation of flame retardants.

Covestro has more than 50 years of polycarbonate manufacturing experience in the medical device industry, and the launch of the new product underscores the company's commitment to continuing to build its global portfolio to bridge the gap in this market. With the rise of hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, these two new materials offer better antiviral toxicity to meet the challenging requirements of medical device enclosures in today's market.

Compared to previous market products, the new polycarbonate material now includes the most stringent UL grade, UL 94 V-0, as well as a new generation of flame retardant properties. In addition, these medical-grade products have greater impact strength, higher rigidity, as well as uv resistance and better fluidity.

"The value proposition of these new durable materials is twofold," said Irving Paz Chagoya, Healthcare division manager for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Covestro. First, these products use a new generation of phosphorus-based flame retardants. Second, these new polycarbonate materials incorporate multiple properties -- improved chemical resistance, impact strength, heat resistance, and more -- in a single solution."
